The short answer

In the UK, every match of the 2026 Guinness Six Nations is free-to-air. The 15 men's matches are split between two broadcasters under a deal that runs from 2026 to 2029: the BBC (on BBC One and BBC iPlayer) and ITV (on ITV1 and ITVX, with STV in Scotland). ITV carries every England fixture; the BBC carries the Scotland and Wales home games, except when those teams host England, which goes to ITV. Both broadcasters are entirely free — no subscription, no pay-TV package. You only need a TV aerial or the free BBC iPlayer and ITVX apps. The BBC also carries all of the Women's Six Nations through 2029.

BBC and ITV: the free-to-air split

For the 2026-2029 cycle, the UK Six Nations rights are shared between the BBC and ITV, and both are free-to-air public-service broadcasters. The BBC shows five men's Six Nations matches a year, including Scotland and Wales home games — with one important exception. ITV shows the other ten of the fifteen men's matches, including every England fixture. The split works on home games. The BBC has the Scotland and Wales home matches, except when Scotland or Wales host England — those games go to ITV, because ITV carries every England match home and away. So if you want to watch England, the answer is always ITV. If you want a Scotland or Wales home game against anyone other than England, it is on the BBC. Every other fixture falls into ITV's ten-match share. Both broadcasters stream their coverage free: the BBC on BBC iPlayer, ITV on ITVX (and STV Player in Scotland). Between them they carry all fifteen men's matches live and free, so a UK rugby fan needs nothing more than a TV aerial or the two free streaming apps to watch the entire 2026 Championship.

Which channel is each match on?

The simplest rule: England is always on ITV. Every one of England's five fixtures — home and away across the Championship — is on ITV1 and ITVX. That covers England's matches against France, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Italy wherever they are played. The BBC's five matches are built around Scotland and Wales home games (except when they host England). So a Scotland home match against, say, France or Ireland is on the BBC; a Wales home match against Italy or Ireland is on the BBC. When Scotland or Wales host England, that specific game moves to ITV. The remaining fixtures — the other home games across France, Ireland and Italy — fall into ITV's ten-match allocation. The practical upshot for a fan: check whether England is involved (ITV), or whether it is a Scotland or Wales home game not involving England (BBC), and otherwise expect ITV. Matchcast lists each 2026 Six Nations fixture with its UK broadcaster so you never have to guess on matchday.

Streaming free on iPlayer and ITVX

Neither broadcaster charges for Six Nations coverage. BBC iPlayer streams the BBC's matches free on smart TVs, phones, tablets, games consoles and the web — you need a UK TV Licence to watch live BBC content, as with all live BBC broadcasts, but there is no separate sports subscription. ITVX streams ITV's matches free after a one-time free ITVX account registration, on the same broad range of UK devices; in Scotland the STV Player carries the STV regional coverage. This makes the Six Nations one of the best-value major sporting events in the UK: a full Championship — Super Saturdays, the title run-in and every England game — for nothing beyond what a UK household already has. There is no scenario where a UK viewer needs a paid subscription to watch the 2026 Six Nations.

The Women's Six Nations and the schedule

The BBC also carries all of the Women's Six Nations fixtures through 2029, free-to-air across BBC channels and BBC iPlayer — so the women's Championship is fully covered free alongside the men's. The men's Six Nations runs across five rounds from late January or early February into March, with matches on Friday nights, Saturday afternoons and evenings, and Super Sunday fixtures, building to the final-round Super Saturday when the title can be decided. Kick-offs are at UK time, so there are no time-zone issues for British viewers. Matchcast lists every 2026 Six Nations fixture — men's and women's — with the BBC or ITV broadcaster for each, all of it free-to-air.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Six Nations free to watch in the UK?
Yes — every single match. The 2026 Guinness Six Nations is entirely free-to-air in the UK, split between the BBC (BBC One and BBC iPlayer) and ITV (ITV1 and ITVX, with STV in Scotland) under a deal running from 2026 to 2029. There is no subscription or pay-TV package needed — just a TV aerial or the free iPlayer and ITVX apps (a UK TV Licence is required for live BBC viewing, as with all BBC content).
What channel are England's Six Nations games on?
ITV — always. ITV carries every England fixture in the Six Nations, home and away, on ITV1 and ITVX. That covers England against France, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Italy wherever the game is played. If you want to watch England, the answer is ITV.
Which Six Nations games are on the BBC?
The BBC shows five men's matches a year, built around Scotland and Wales home games — except when Scotland or Wales host England, which moves to ITV. So a Scotland or Wales home match against any team other than England is on the BBC (BBC One and BBC iPlayer). Matchcast lists each fixture with its BBC or ITV broadcaster.
Can I stream the Six Nations for free in the UK?
Yes. BBC iPlayer streams the BBC's matches free, and ITVX streams ITV's matches free after a one-time free account registration — both on smart TVs, phones, tablets, consoles and the web (STV Player in Scotland). A UK TV Licence is needed to watch live BBC content, but there is no separate sports subscription for either service.
Is the Women's Six Nations on TV in the UK?
Yes. The BBC carries all of the Women's Six Nations fixtures through 2029, free-to-air across BBC channels and BBC iPlayer. So the women's Championship is fully covered free alongside the men's tournament.
